Preamble

This project is intended to reach all Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP) and Community Action Program for Children (CAPC) program staff across Canada, the community organizations they work within and their families who access those supports. Success is often achieved when program staff and parents work together to create a supportive environment for the child, both within the programs, and at home.

A higher proportion of these children are part of populations with trauma and compromised social determinants of health. Many of these children access supports and services through federally funded programs, including CPNP and CAPC. Recognizing the impact that can come from a comprehensive understanding of how to support individuals with FASD across a team of supports, this training aims to build your knowledge, capacity, and toolkit for supporting individuals with FASD.

Children with FASD often have challenges with learning, attention, memory, problem-solving, sensory integration and self-regulation, problem-solving, along with poor coordination, impulsiveness, and speech and hearing impairments. During this period of growth, support can have greatly beneficial effects; indeed, early assessment, diagnosis, and intervention are critical protective factors against the adverse outcomes that come from being unsupported.

It is important to note that these negative aspects are all connected to that singular missing piece: support. Supporting FASD stems from fundamental understanding. In understanding the children and caregivers you work with, efforts can be made to combat stigma and open dialogue—these conversations can contribute to early assessment, diagnosis and intervention.

In other words, by taking this course, you are part of the creation of an FASD-informed workforce at a critical time in a child’s development. These modules will guide you through learning about FASD, what it can look like, how to open conversation around it, and how you can offer support in the realm of your work. Please take the time to let the information sink in and connect with how you can create change.

The Language We Use:

Throughout this online training, we use the language of (pregnant) women, mothers, parents, and people, with the intention of being inclusive of transgender, gender diverse, Two-Spirit, and non-binary individuals who are pregnant and/or parenting children with FASD, as well as those who see themselves as women or mothers.
