Level 1: Basic FASD Training

Foundations in FASD is a basic training course intended for everyone that will come into contact with individuals with FASD including all sectors of work, families, individuals with FASD, spouses, and the general public. This foundational level training program provides the perspective of individuals who have FASD, is evidence-based, employs a culturally sensitive approach, and is presented in a way that is responsive to the learner's needs. This online basic training course will take on average two hours to complete.

Level 2: Sector/Special Interest FASD Training

Empowering Advocacy Skills For Families, Caregivers, and Individuals with FASD is a training course for people with FASD, families, caregivers, and those who support them. The course provides clear and practical information that can be used in advocacy work.

The course helps learners understand advocacy in the context of FASD and why it matters. Learners will explore self-advocacy, family and caregiver advocacy, and advocacy within systems such as schools, health care, community services, and the justice system. The course also supports learning how to navigate social systems across Canada and find FASD resources for each province and territory.

Learners will build skills in communication, relationship building, and problem-solving. The course introduces the S.O.L.U.T.I.O.N. Principles of Advocacy and includes stories and examples to support learning. The course ends with action planning and next steps to help learners move forward with confidence.

Understanding and Supporting FASD in Early Learning Settings is designed for early childhood educators, community service providers, and families who support children in the early years. It introduces key concepts about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and provides practical strategies for creating supportive, inclusive environments for children who may experience neurodevelopmental differences.

FASD for Community and Social Services Professionals Level ll is an advanced training course for frontline workers that work directly with individuals with FASD and their families, including but not exclusive to those that work in financial and disability services, in FASD networks, housing, shelter and crisis supports, and employment programs.

FASD for Judicial and Legal Professionals Level II is an advanced training course for professionals in the Justice system. This Level 2 training course builds on the Level 1 Foundations in FASD course and presents evidence-based and practice-informed information that can be easily and effectively integrated into your practice and approach to working with individuals with FASD.

FASD for Solicitor General Professionals Level II is an advanced training course for professionals in the Solicitor General system. This Level 2 training course builds on the Level 1 Foundations in FASD course and presents evidence-based and practice-informed information that can be easily and effectively integrated into your practice and approach to working with individuals with FASD.

FASD for School Staff Level II is an advanced training course intended for all educators working with students with FASD including all administrators, teachers, educational assistants, ECE’s, office admin, Board personnel and bus drivers. This Level 2 training course, building on the Level 1 Foundations in FASD course, provides the perspective of individuals who have FASD and their caregivers, is evidence-based and current (updated Summer 2024), employs a culturally sensitive approach, and is presented in a way that is responsive to educators.

Identifying Best Practices for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is designed for use by professionals working in the substance use, mental health, housing, employment, justice, and other service delivery fields. These settings provide ideal opportunities to implement brief, effective approaches to improve outcomes in preventing FASD, screening for FASD, and supporting success among individuals with FASD.

The Prevention Conversation is an online training program for front-line health and social services professionals to provide them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage their clients/patients in a supportive and non-judgmental conversation about alcohol use during pregnancy, its lasting effects on the developing child, and resources and supports available to women of childbearing age.

This online training was developed alongside the guide “Moving Towards FASD-Informed Care In Substance Use Treatment”. Both serve to outline current practices that can support individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) who are in treatment for substance use.

Level 3: Specialized/Expert FASD Training

This is not an introductory course on FASD. This course provides standardized training based on current evidence and the new Canadian guidelines. Diagnostic teams are encouraged to take this course together and there are places for discussion and deliberation among the team within the curriculum.

This course was co-developed with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) and was planned to achieve scientific integrity, objectivity and balance.
